Our values support our mission to deliver trusted advice that improves lives.
Thousands of private and public employers, public sector entities and multiemployer benefit funds place their trust in us to recommend solutions that meet the needs of their people as well as consider their organization’s unique priorities, perspectives and objectives.
We believe that bringing a range of professional and educational experiences to our consulting enables us to deliver the best possible advice to each client.
The fact that we have worked with many of our clients for decades is a testament to our role as their trusted advisors.
We build lasting relationships with our clients — and each other — by living our values.
We are guided by these deeply held values, which have a long history.
Significantly, our mission and values emerged directly from our organizational roots: from our clients and the work we do for them. Part of the origin story of Segal is our founder, Martin E. Segal, camping out at the docks in New York City to meet workers as they left their shifts to sign them up for health benefits.
These workers and their families were perceived as too high risk to insure and, as a result, were asked to pay disproportionately high premiums or denied insurance altogether. By working with both labor and management, our founder created ways to bring affordable, high-quality health benefits to these workers and their families.
As an employee-owned company, we are free from ties to other organizations that might otherwise influence our consulting recommendations. We bring a fresh perspective to each consulting assignment and draw on the talents of many colleagues to deliver the best possible advice.
We have formal policies for quality, as well as established quality control principles and processes to ensure accurate and high-quality deliverables for our clients. All actuarial work, for example, is subject to multiple levels of peer review and is approved by a credentialed actuary. Our practices conduct frequent quality reviews of their work to ensure that it is of a consistently high standard.
The longstanding relationships we have with many clients is an indicator of their satisfaction with the quality of our consulting advice.
To protect the propriety and confidentiality of data clients share with us, we have strong cybersecurity practices that include mandatory annual training for all colleagues.
Ensuring high-quality work is one of the criteria we consider when deciding to recognize colleagues with the Segal Star Award for going above and beyond their roles.
We prioritize continuous learning because we recognize that staying current with changes in technology, laws and regulations, vendor products and industries is essential to advising our clients and to sparking innovation.
Throughout the year, our subject matter experts conduct numerous trainings for colleagues across all of our practices.
We require all colleagues to take annual companywide training, including on cybersecurity awareness and best practices.
We offer training in business skills and on our technology.
Additionally, we have a formal management development program.
We foster a workplace where we respect each other’s perspectives and where everyone is treated fairly and can thrive so we can better serve clients.
One way we reinforce our commitment to providing a collegial community is our companywide Candid Conversation where all employees can learn from each other’s experiences, perspectives and opinions. This one-hour virtual conversation takes place every Friday, during the workday.
Our business resource groups (BRGs), which are formed by employees, for all employees, organize events and other forms of education that encourage respect for our differences. Any two or more employees can work together to propose a new BRG to advance our business and align with our mission, vision, values, policies and practices. Our BRGs focus on leadership development, networking and building community.
Every colleague is welcome to fully participate in every BRG. We are proud that all parts of Segal’s population attend BRG-sponsored programs and events.

At Segal, we have a “one company” philosophy.
That means we draw from talent across the company to create the best consulting teams to deliver our best advice to our clients. Teamwork and collaboration, behaviors inherent in our one company philosophy, allow team members to share ideas and best practices — and ensure consistently high-quality client service.
Collaboration is also key to how our business operations teams interact with one another as one company.
Companywide collaboration is another criterion for the Segal Star Award.
We aim to attract a broad array of qualified candidates. Our candidate sourcing efforts include connecting with professional organizations and our campus recruiting effort has been growing. In 2024, Segal participated in recruiting events and meetings at 30 colleges and universities.
Our paid internship program gives undergraduate and graduate students meaningful business experience — and provides us with a strong talent pipeline. Segal encourages all business units to consider hiring interns. The number of full-time hires from our Internship Program continues to increase.
We strive to give all employees opportunities to advance at Segal by offering career development tools and processes so each person is inspired to reach their full potential.
