On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court announced its decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. In a five-four decision, the Court ruled that the U.S. Constitution requires all states to issue marriage licenses to same-gender couples and to recognize same-gender marriages entered into elsewhere. The decision has implications for sponsors of employee benefit plans, which will be addressed in a forthcoming publication.
