On Monday, the United Health Group announced plans to combine its OptumRx pharmacy care service with pharmacy benefits management (PBM) firm, Catamaran. Segal vice president and Pharmacy Benefits Manager Ritu Malhotra, Pharm.D, commented:
“Catamaran’s technological sophistication should couple well with OptumRx’s focus on clinical analytics. Further, the creation of another large PBM should result in improved pricing terms for our clients and a greater ability for the new organization to compete in the marketplace.”
Dr. Malhotra added, “The flip side of increased market presence has been that maintaining superior service as organizations of this size merge has been mixed. Often, staff is consolidated, account management turnover is increased and call centers are integrated. This can result in potential disruptions in service for plan sponsors and their members – we will be vigilant in watching for any fall out of this type.”
