Summer 2008 Report of Results from the 2008 Segal Medicare Part D Survey of Multiemployer Health Funds
Abstract
Sponsors of group health plans that include retiree prescription drug coverage have a number of options in response to the availability of prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D. This report summarizes the findings of the 2008 Segal Medicare Part D Survey of Multiemployer Health Funds, The Segal Company's third annual survey of multiemployer health funds' response to under Medicare Part D. The more than 260 funds in the survey represent a range of industries and geographic areas.
The report includes survey data on the percentage of funds that chose each option for 2008 and how that choice compares to what last year's survey found. Most multiemployer health funds continue to take the Retiree Drug Subsidy (RDS).
This survey report also discusses the different ways plan sponsors are treating participants who sign up for Medicare Part D coverage on their own. The report includes commentary on the attractions of the RDS for multiemployer health funds, as well as observations on why many plan sponsors are finding it difficult to meet the administrative demands necessary to support RDS. The report concludes with the outlook for 2009.
