Outlook on Women's Health Issues

September 14, 2009

"Women often make the key decisions about medical, food and lifestyle choices that affect not only themselves but also their whole family's health," observes Dr. Sadhna Paralkar, health management consultant to The Segal Company.

Dr. Paralkar points out that women have to juggle multiple health-related roles:

  • Balance family health responsibilities with employment obligations.
  • Primary responsibility for health of children and parents.
  • Especially challenging for women who are sole breadwinners.

An expert on health and disease management with years of experience in corporate health, self-funded collectively bargained plans and managed care, she consults with clients on strategies for women's health promotion, disease and care management.

Dr. Paralkar looks at how disease management and wellness vendors/programs incorporate messages, incentives and formats that acknowledge this gender influence over access to health care treatments.

Dr. Paralkar holds a degree in medicine from the University of Bombay as well as an M.S. in Public Health from the University of Illinois and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
