- 14th Annual Fund Administrators' Seminar
Friday, June 8, 2012 | ![]() |
Dear Friends,
On the eve of what will undoubtedly be a historic Supreme Court decision, we are faced with many questions:
Will the Court uphold some, or all, of the Affordable Care Act (“ACA”)? Or will the law be struck down? Regardless of the decision, how will it affect your funds? Will the outcome of the 2012 Presidential election further change the landscape for collectively bargained employee benefit programs? What will replace the zone rules when the Pension Protection Act sunsets in 2014? Are the signs of economic recovery we are seeing real? Will employment return to pre-recession levels? Is stock market volatility the new normal? How can plan sponsors deal with the continuing rise in health care costs? How can benefit plans continue to provide meaningful benefits to participants while recognizing today’s economic realities?
Amid all this uncertainty, there are two constants: more demands will be placed on you in your role as administrators, and you can rely on us to help you deal with these unknowns.
Once again, The Segal Company is pleased to host our Annual Fund Administrators’ Seminar on Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City.
Here is a preview of the sessions at this year’s event. We truly value our partnership with you and hope that you can join us.

1:45 - 2:45 | Breakout Sessions 1A, 1BBreakout Session 1A: Reporting and Disclosure Revisited— New Requirements and Old, the Saga Continues… Let’s face it: the evolving regulatory environment is increasingly complex. The IRS and DOL have increased audit activity in recent years, and new laws, such as the ACA and the Pension Protection Act, leave funds with more reporting and disclosure requirements. Please join our compliance experts, Karen Johnson, New York Health Compliance Manager, and Ann Ravenstine, New York Retirement Compliance Manager, along with Dennis Kearney, Benefits Consultant, as they guide you through the ins and outs of the compliance world. They will use Segal’s Annual Reporting and Disclosure Calendar as a road map, discussing how this information can be organized to fit each plan’s unique characteristics and how to keep all of these requirements on your radar. Breakout Session 1B: There ARE Ways to Save on Your Prescription Drug Program Join Ritu Malhotra, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacy Consultant, and Tom Whittaker, Benefits Consultant, as they discuss ways to save money on your prescription drug program. This lively session will explore savings that can be generated from competitive marketing projects and/or re-negotiation of existing contracts. In addition, we will assess how changes in the PBM marketplace may affect your plans. Among our areas of focus will be: the consolidation of major PBMs and the rise of second-tier PBMs, preferred drug lists vs. formularies, PBM strategies to maximize rebates, and direct-to-consumer couponing. |
2:45 - 3:00 | Break |
3:00 - 4:00 | Breakout Sessions 2A, 2BBreakout 2A: Managing Defined Benefit Plan Risks, Multiemployer Style Many defined benefit plans are in distress, still reeling from the 2008 financial meltdown and downturns in employment, while some plans are well-funded and considering benefit improvements. In either case, trustees are focusing more than ever before on identifying and assessing the impact of various risks on the long-term health of these plans. Please join Consulting Actuaries, Aldwin Frias and Nick Laccetti, as they go back to basics, discussing the different variables that can affect a defined benefit plan’s actuarial position. This session will include a demonstration of our live, interactive modeling software, which plan sponsors frequently use to evaluate the sensitivity of a plan’s condition to future variations in employment levels, investment returns and many other variables. The software can also assist plan sponsors in crafting solutions to these challenging problems. Breakout 2B: Cost Containment Strategies in Today’s Health Care Environment Although the ACA remains the focus of much speculation and discussion, we should not lose sight of the current health care climate, including how we got to where we are today. Please join Ed Kaplan, National Health Practice Leader, and Margaret Lennon, Health Consultant, as they focus on the current environment, as well as 2014 and beyond. This session will complement the general session with a focus on leading edge-cost containment features, some that are a direct result of the ACA. Ed and Margaret will provide guidance on plan design strategies to help you meet today’s health care challenges. |
